At least 5,021 people have been confirmed dead after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Turkey and Syria early Monday.

Turkish The death toll rose to at least 3,419, Turkey’s Vice President Fiat Oktay said in a televised briefing on Tuesday.

Okte said at least 20,534 people were reported injured.

Orhan Tatar, an official at the country’s disaster management agency, told a televised briefing earlier that 11,000 buildings had been reported damaged in Turkey so far. He added that about 25,000 emergency responders are working on the affected scenes.

in SyriaOfficials said the death toll in government-controlled areas and opposition-controlled areas had risen to 1,602.

At least 3,649 people have been injured across the country, according to officials.
